Happy Friday From Kumbia Queers!

At first thought, cumbia and punk rock seem like two musical genres that you’d never hear on the same dance floor, let alone be meshed together to form a new style. But the ladies from the Argentine-Mexican band Kumbia Queers do it so well, and in such a distinctively insolent fashion, it seems that this new breed of dance music was long overdue.

Comprised of a member from Mexico City’s Las Ultrasonicas and five musicians from Buenos Aires’ She Devils, they join forces to play dark, tropical interpretations of Black Sabbaththe Cure, and Madonna, and write sultry songs about hot chicks and hating Mondays.

Listening to their music makes me want to dance like this while wearing bondage pants, a ripped Crass t-shirt and spiked jewelry. Which leaves just one question pending – is Kumbia Queers a band for punks who get down to cumbia or for cumbia junkies who secretly like punk rock?
