9 young immigration activists released from Arizona prison

ELOY — Undocumented-immigrant activist Marco Saavedra hopes that the 16 days he spent in Eloy Detention Center after attempting to re-enter the United States serves as a timely message about the plight of “dreamers” like him and the federal policies that separate families.

Saavedra, 23, and eight other members of the “Dream 9,” a group of undocumented migrant activists who crossed into the United States from Mexico last month in a protest against federal immigration policy, left Eloy for Tucson after being released by authorities on humanitarian parole Wednesday afternoon. In a symbolic acknowledgment of being raised and educated in the U.S., many slipped on graduation gowns as they met supporters in Tucson.
