Latina veteran works to change perceptions

HAYWARD — Her young son’s questions about her uniform inspired veteran Graciela Tiscareño-Sato to write a bilingual children’s book about her experiences in the Air Force.

“I was putting my flight suit on and shining my boots the night before a Veterans Day presentation at his preschool,” she recalled. “My little guy had never seen me in uniform. He came in and started asking questions.”

Her book, “Good Night Captain Mama/Buenas Noches Capitan Mama” explains why some mothers wear uniforms and what Tiscareño-Sato did while in the military, she said.

“Mommies are veterans, too; Latinas are veterans, too. We don’t hear about that,”
