Militia group says it’s heading to help secure Texas border

*How is this new? There have been so-called “militia” slithering along the border on many occasions in the past. They come from cities hundreds of miles from the border, set up lawn chairs in remote areas, display their guns and peer into Mexico through their binoculars. After a while they quietly disband (usually after a weekend or two), regroup and come back when they’ve accumulated more time-off. Remember the Minutemen? This is the same type of circus, only now they’ve picked on my hometown – Laredo, one of the safest cities along the border. There are two things I’ll keep in mind as I follow this story: one, that I’ve yet to hear any sense of fear from my friends and family in Laredo; and two, that I may reach out to these pseudo-patriots to suggest some areas of Laredo where they might consider “patrolling” – just to see how long the neighbors there put up with this vigilante nonsense. An group that identifies itself as a coalition of “Patriots” has put out a call for people to go to the Texas-Mexico border and help with a citizen militia operation called “Secure our Border – Laredo.”

A spokeswoman for the group, Denice Freeman, said the operation is a call for civilian militia members — both armed and unarmed — to voluntarily guard private property in the Laredo area and other Texas locations where owners feel threatened by “drug cartels and from gangs, particularly the MS-13 gangs,” a Salvadoran-based gang that is considered among the most dangerous in this country by law enforcement.

Freeman said she expected militia members to become visible in border communities, including the Rio Grande Valley, in the coming weeks …
