A Mexican journalist was reportedly kidnapped from his home in the state of Veracruz. Local media said photojournalist Moises Sanchez Cerezo was abducted with his computer, camera and phone on January 2.

Sanchez also reportedly participated in local neighbourhood watch groups to confront organised crime in his hometown, Medellin de Bravo.

According to the National Human Rights Commission, Sanchez Cerezo’s focus on crimes in the town made him an “inconvenient journalist” for the local mayor. Free speech organisation Articulo 19 reported that prior to his disappearance, Sanchez Cerezo hadreceived threats that the mayor sought to silence him.
