Café Monsiváis, Pilsen’s newest café, pays homage to Mexican writer Carlos Monsivais who passed away in Mexico City in 2010 at the age of 72.

Jesús “Chuy” Márquez said he and co-owner Katie Schlick decided to name their new business at 1637 W. 18th St. after the famous author and chronicler of the life of the Mexican people.

“He was a chronicler of the popular culture of Mexico, he was a critic who wrote without been spiteful or offensive,” said Márquez during an interview.

Márquez, a Mexican immigrant from Guamuchil, Sinaloa, said the café will be adorned with pictures and posters of Monsiváis.
