Philadelphia: Diaz makes his mayoral run official

*I love how Diaz launched his campaign at a favorite restaurant of Philadelphia’s Latino politicians. There’s a place like that in every town, where Latino politicos gather for planning and chisme. Another Latino, former City Solicitor Ken Trujillo, is also in the running. VL

Former Common Pleas Court Judge Nelson A. Diaz launched his bid to become Philadelphia’s first Latino mayor at a campaign rally Thursday that emphasized his ethnic roots and up-by-the-bootstraps success story.

He signaled that as a candidate, he would make reforming the Philadelphia school system his chief priority.

“There are two reasons I’m in this race,” Diaz told reporters after his formal announcement speech. “One, I know I can win. Two, I’m going to fix the school system, no matter what. I will die fixing the school system.”

Diaz, 67, who is of Puerto Rican descent, opened his campaign at Tierra Colombiana, the North Fifth Street restaurant that is a favorite gathering spot for the city’s Latino politicians.
