When It Comes to Latino Stereotypes in the Media, Sofia Vergara Isn’t the Problem

Sofia Vergara gets a lot of flak for taking on “stereotypical” Latina roles in movies and TV. Her Modern Family character Gloria has been derided as an updated version ofCharo, the OG “cuchi-cuchi ’60s and ’70s ditzy Latina,” and critics have decried her recent role as the widow of a Colombian drug lord in Hot Pursuit as “so bad it will keep [her] locked up tight in her sexy, over-the-top Colombian comedian cliché box.”

 But in a recent interview with People en Español, Sofia defended her choice to play stereotypical roles, arguing that she didn’t see anything wrong with them.

“I’m not afraid to play a stereotype, least of all a Latina woman stereotype,” she said. “Generally, we are women with a lot of passion who are crazed by our families, by our husbands, to help our kids. We get involved in things that don’t affect us, but it’s because our family matters and we want to help everyone.”
