Today marks the sixth anniversary of the day Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed as the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. In recognition of this great day in American history, we’re looking back some of Justice Sotomayor’s most memorable quotes because we all can learn a thing or two from this great and wise Latina.

Without further ado: 

1. In 2001, Sonia Sotomayor gave her now infamous “wise Latina” speech, during which she reminded a group of University of California Berkeley law students that their personal experiences would enrich the legal system. Here’s what she had to say:

I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.
