The Latino vote is bigger and better educated than ever before, a new report finds

*According to the latest Pew numbers, Latino millennials should be the new political target – half of eligible Latino voters are millennials and their education level is rising. But, the percentage of Latino millennials likely to cast ballots still lags. If I were consulting a political candidate I’d tell them to spend money on Latino millennial voter registration and mobilization, not so much on advertising, and spend ad money on likely Latino voters – the 50 plus segment. It’s also young. Adults age 18-35 make up nearly half of the record 27.3 million Latinos eligible to vote in this year’s presidential election, the report found.

But although the number of Latinos eligible to vote is surging — 40% higher than it was just eight years ago — and education levels are rising, the percentage likely to actually cast ballots in November continues to lag behind other major racial and ethnic groups, the report found.

That’s partly because young people don’t vote as consistently as older people do, but also because Latino eligible voters are heavily concentrated in states — including California, Texas and New York — that are not prime election battlegrounds.
