Migrants’ interest in voting rises

*Back in June, when Donald Trump made his infamous “Mexicans are rapists” campaign kick-off speech, there was a prediction: that Latinos would be so insulted by his remarks that they would rise and show their anger at the polls. Trump was characterized as Pete Wilson redux, only on a national scale. The only limit was that 52% of U.S. Latinos can’t vote, either because they’re too young or aren’t citizens. Here’s some good news, non-citizen immigrants are getting involved.  VL

Anti-immigrant rhetoric by some presidential contenders may be having an effect not unforeseen by some Latino organizations — a renewed interest by immigrants in naturalization.

For the first time in recent years, the Mexican Consulate in Dallas will hold a free forum and clinic on how to become a U.S. citizen. It’s a topic that has come to the forefront for many immigrant advocacy groups, as well as local and national Latino organizations.

“I’ve seen that people are more engaged, and more immigrants being more proactive about it,” said Ramiro Luna Hinojosa, executive director of the North Texas Young Latino Leaders.

Immigrants have become increasingly alarmed at some of the talk about massive deportations and feel compelled to do something, he said.
