Mexico wins gold in hockey championships

*I feel great and terrible about this. Great because it’s a good thing. Who would have thought that Mexico would win a world hockey championship?They won in the under-20 age bracket, so those kids did a wonderful job. But I feel terrible because at first I thought it was a joke, or a hoax. So I researched the story and found it legitimized by several news organizations in Mexico.  I apologize for that, I never should have doubted that Mexico could win a youth world-hockey championship. In fact Mexico’s under-20 team has won the world hockey championship three times. VL

With all the snow that has been seen in some parts of Mexico this winter, perhaps it should be no surprise to see this country participating — and winning — in cold-weather sports.

Team Mexico won the gold medal yesterday in the International Ice Hockey Federation under-20 world championship in Division III.

It was the country’s third gold-medal win in this category since 2005.

Mexico won the final 9-2 over South Africa, playing at the Mexico City Ice Dome, after winning four out of five other games in the championship.
