“I have an uncle who is gay. And I hate that people hate.”

These were the words spoken by this anonymous 12-year-old boy, who stood up to more than 11,000 people protesting same-sex marriage in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico, on Saturday, September 10.

The photo was taken by photojournalist Manuel Rodriguez and published to Regeneración. Initially, Rodriguez thought the kid was playing, but after speaking to him he realized he was “standing up” for his uncle and to these people who were marching against Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s proposed law to allow same-sex marriage throughout all of Mexico.

The photo of this 12-year-old is going viral and his actions of courage and strength are being compared to the “Tank Man” protests that took place in China’s Tiananmen Square in 1989 where an individual of unknown identity faces a much larger force than him to defend a cause.
