Hillary won last night becasue it was hers to lose

For all the build-up to last night’s Presidential Debate, I can sum-up the outcome in a few words:

The three-day lead into the debate was a set-up worthy of the best Hollywood hype machine, starting with Friday’s groping remark revelation and ending with Trump’s pre-debate press conference with four alleged Bill Clinton sexual assault victims.

My assessment is that Hillary won the night because it was hers to lose.

Trump’s attacks and antics played well to his base but not beyond, so he gained nothing. At best he survived the weekend’s political storm, but his campaign is in irreparable distress and all he managed to do was to add kindling to an already fired up base.

Hillary, I think, planned to give Donald enough slack for him to trip himself, again. It was easy last night to see the man who made the predatory remarks recorded in a bus eleven years ago.

Pundits will get mired in describing jabs and hooks, but Trump is losing on points and did no lasting damage to his opponent. So she gets the round. I don’t buy into the false claim that a tie for Trump would be an actual win. That thinking is the product of lowered expectations.

Slowing the bleeding is not a victory, it’s prolonging the agony. Hillary let Donald wind up and deliver his best shot, and he got nothing from it. For Latino voters – because that’s what we’re about – last night changed nada.
