Happy Friday From Caetano Veloso

Like a fine wine Caetano Veloso is a performer who just seems to get better with age. The Brazilian singer-songwriter extraordinaire is became known during the 1960s as one of the founders of the Tropicalismo movement, an avant-garde music style that blended poetry, politics, African rhythms and rock and roll.

Veloso’s music and political views forced him into exile from Brazil during the military dictatorship in 1969, but upon his return to his homeland in the early 1970′s, his fame rose even higher as he became one of the most popular Brazilian singers worldwide.

I had the pleasure of seeing Veloso perform in Buenos Aires in 2010, and he had the Spanish-speaking crowd singing along to almost every word in Portuguese. Enjoy some of his videos below and have a great weekend!

Happy Friday From Adriana Calcanhotto!

Ahhh, Brazil. The land of beautiful beaches, cool people, and the lovely Adriana Calcanhotto.

Sometimes tender and melancholy, other times passionate and lively, Adriana’s captivating voice and poetic songwriting made her one of Brazil’s most popular artists of the past two decades.

We leave you with her singing about the desire to become a sailor to avoid heartbreak, imploring an ex to return her belongings and her heart, covering Manu Chao like no other, and being lost without her lover.

Here’s to a relaxing weekend!

Happy Friday From Marisa Monte!

I don’t know why it took me so long to post about Marisa Monte, but truth be told, we’re all lucky I finally did! For some reason, I decided to start listening to her wonderful, soft and beautiful music again this week and I remembered all over again why I fell in love with her in the first place (in addition to the fact that the Brazilian songstress is gorgeous).

I came to know Marisa Monte in college when learning Portuguese. I love that language and miss it, but listening to Monte is a great way to keep in touch with Spanish’s sister tongue. If you understand Spanish even so-so you can get it, plus, Monte’s amazingly soft, sweet and yet strong voice paired with gentle instrumentation and her often playful intonation make listening to her music both relaxing and fun.

I can’t say enough good things about her, the songs are in order of my favorite.
