The Top 5 Signs You’re At A Mexican Wedding

Recently  I had the pleasure of attending a family wedding — a Mexican wedding. You gotta love Mexican weddings. And as I tweeted with a #MexicanWedding hashtag, I came to realize that we all love Mexican weddings for different reasons, here are just a few.

1.) The mariachis are related to the bride or groom.

You may scoff, but let’s just say, it can happen.

2.) It doesn’t matter what kind of music is playing, people are dancing cumbias.

Again, I’ve seen salsa and merengue and even country-western songs accompanied by cumbias — which is perfect. The dance steps are pretty similar anyway.

3.) There’s a money dance in which the entire object is to give dollar bills to a dancing woman— the bride.

I never really understood this one since I was a girl and continue not to, but it’s kind of funny to see people standing in line to pin dollars onto a fully clothed woman.

4.) At any given point, any occasion becomes grito-worthy.

Do you look beautiful? ¡Ayyyy! Are you having a good time? ¡Ayyyy! Have you not seen each other in a long time? ¡Ayyyy! Do they have those little hot dog hors d’oeuvres that you love? ¡Ayyyy! Get the idea?

5.) The suits and dresses trend a little tight.

Let’s face it, for whatever reason, tight pants and dresses are all the rage at Mexican weddings. The ladies and gentlemen guests either didn’t get a chance to buy a new traje for the occasion or simply think they look stylish with their rolls showing.

But who cares? It’s a Mexican wedding!
