U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes On Jan Brewer’s Treatment Of Obama, Immigrants

Texas Congressman Silvestre Reyes released a statement today comparing Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s treatment of President Barack Obama on a recent trip to that state with her treatment of immigrants:

If Jan Brewer welcomed President Obama the way she has welcomed immigrants in Arizona, I am not surprised that the President was taken aback by his encounter with her on the tarmac.

The bottom line is that Governor Brewer has pushed reckless immigration policies that seemingly counter the spirit of the U.S. Constitution and has created one of the most divisive atmospheres in the country’s history as it relates to the issue of immigration reform.

She has inaccurately described the border as violent and lawless, making false claims of gruesome images of headless bodies in deserts to appeal to the most radical elements within the Republican Party.

As a 26 ½ year veteran of the United States Border Patrol and the only Member of Congress with a border law enforcement background, I can attest to the damage this type of rhetoric creates for sound policy making.

As the fate of the Arizona immigration law lies before the Supreme Court, I can only hope that sound judgment and reason will prevail above demagoguery and rhetoric and that the days of finger-wagging and finger pointing will be a thing of the past.
