Smithsonian Latino Virtual Museum Person of Interest: Grupo Falso Baiano

This weeks POI surrounds a music group as opposed to a single person. Grupo Falso Baiano is a group I discovered very recently and was instantly charmed by their music. Their first song I heard was a remix of the classic Super Mario theme done in the style of a very diverse Brazil. They are a choro group and choro is one of the earliest popular sounds. It brings together African rhythms and the sounds of jazz. Their influences are vast, exploring everything from traditional choro and contemporary versions as well as jazz inspired choro.

Oddly enough, Grupo Falso Baiano is not  from Brazil but is in fact from the Bay Area, which makes their name an excellent play on words. A “Falsa baiana” is a fake Bahian. That is to say that it is someone who says they are from the state of Bahia but it not: “since we hail from the San Francisco Bay Area, we are Bahians of North America, but are “fake Brazilians”.”

To take a listen to their music you can visit their site or their Youtube channel:
