Southwest Detroit voters elect 1st Latina council member

Raquel Castaneda-Lopez walked into the banquet room of a Mexican restaurant in southwest Detroit Tuesday night to applause from several dozen supporters, many of whom were Hispanic, like her.
“You never know where your journey will lead you,” she told those gathered at Taqueria El Nacimiento.
Castaneda-Lopez, 32, is believed to be the first Hispanic person elected on the Detroit City Council, which some supporters said is a big step for the city.
