Latinos recall the hope they lost when Kennedy was killed

Leanor Villareal remembers it was a glorious sunny day that November when President John. F. Kennedy came to Dallas.
She was working in accounting at Neiman Marcus, and her boss let the staff go watch the parade with JFK and his wife. The parade route passed through downtown, near the store.
It was a short walk, and Villareal was thrilled to see in person the man whose picture she had on her home altar, hanging alongside an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and a crucifix — a Hispanic Holy Trinity that was a common sight in so many Mexican-American homes.
Moments later, she heard shots. And then the sky grew dark.
