A Racist Storm Brewing Over the Texas Coast

A Texas case involving insurance claims relating to hurricane damage has produced a storm of a different kind; anti-Hispanic (and anti-black) racism in a Texas city bordering Mexico.

“Immigrants should be shot,” reads some of the e-mail correspondence from Bill Knarr of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). Knarr was agent-in-charge of the Brownsville Independent School District regarding assessments resulting from Hurricane Dolly in 2008.

According to court transcripts, Knarr also made references to filling the (Rio Grande) with alligators and extolling the entertainment value of getting drunk and shooting illegal immigrants, Mexicans and their heirs because “there’s too many of them in the country.”
