Latin America has had an impact on the United States for longer than most people, including most Latinos themselves, even realize. Just like the Spanish-language origins of many words associated with the “Cowboy Culture” of the American Southwest have long been blended into Anglo lore, so too has the poinsettia. Yes, this mainstay of Christmas pageantry is actually a Latino member of the flora population.

“What many might not know is that this traditional symbol of the holidays, although considered very U.S. American today, actually began as an import from Latin America,”writes Samuel Rodriguez of Patheos.
