Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron nabbed the Golden Globe for Best Director at the 71st edition of the Golden Globe awards for his directing work on the film “Gravity”.

Cuaron, who got his start at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematograficos in Mexico City where he got expelled for producing a short film in English, thanked Gravity’s leading lady, actress Sandra Bullock and called her “the most incredible collaborator”.

“Because of my thick accent actors end up doing what they think I said and not what I actually said,” he added in jest.

He also thanked his co-screenwriter and son, Jonas, for inspiring him and lastly thanked his mother in Spanish saying “Muchas muchas gracias a mi mama”

The Mexican director’s big career break came in ’91 with the movie “Love in the Time of Hysteria”  which was a big winner at the Toronto Film Festival so much so that it made Hollywood producers take note of Alfonso Cuaron’s work.

In 2003, Cuaron was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing and Original Screenplay for the controversial film Y Tu Mama Tambien and in 2007 was nominated for another Oscar in the category of Best Writing and Adapted Screenplay for his work in the film Children of Men.
