French video artist explores skin color in the Latino community

By Elda Silva, San Antonio Express News

SAN ANTONIO — Once the camera was rolling, Sylvie Blocher gave her subjects only two directions: “enter” and “exit.”

The rest, she explained beforehand, was up to them.

There were no props for the subjects to work with. No dialog. Each person was asked to silently engage the camera from inside a narrow triangle outlined in green tape on the floor in front of a backdrop painted in a spectrum of skin tones ranging from a soft peach to a rich brown.

When it is complete, the video, which deals with the issue of skin color in the Latino community, will be part of a series of three works collectively titled “The Color of Confusion.”
