Poll Casts Doubt on Martinez’s Sway With Latinos

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is viewed as a budding national star for the GOP, but her appeal to Hispanic voters may be less than believed if a new poll is any indication.

According to findings released Tuesday by Public Policy Polling (D), the Republican incumbent leads all five of her Democratic challengers, but Martinez actually loses the Hispanic vote in two possible matchups. In pairings with New Mexico Attorney General Gary King and New Mexico Green Chamber of Commerce President Lawrence Rael, she garnered 38 percent support from Hispanics vs. 49 percent for King and 47 percent for Rael.

Additionally, Latino respondents chose Martinez over two other Democratic opponents — state Sens. Linda Lopez and Howie Morales — by just one percentage point.
