Special White House ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 10th

Washington, DC—On Tuesday, June 10th, the President of the United States, Barack Obama, will sign into law H.R. 1726, a bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers, announced Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi.

The ceremony will take place at 10:55 a.m. at the White House.

H.R. 1726, authored by Pierluisi and Congressman Bill Posey of Florida, was approved unanimously by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 19th and by the U.S. Senate on May 22nd, after intensive advocacy efforts by many organizations and individuals.

Now that the bill has been approved by both chambers, the next—and final—step is for President Obama to sign the bill into law.

“At last, justice is being done.  The 65th Infantry Regiment will join baseball star and humanitarian Roberto Clemente as the only Hispanics in the history of this country ever to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, which is the highest form of recognition that Congress can bestow on a group or individual for outstanding and enduring achievement,” said Pierluisi.

“This moment may have taken a long time to arrive, but that makes it even more special.  It is an honor to pay tribute to our military veterans for their sacrifice, their nobility and their patriotism.  I feel proud to have been part of this battle,” said the Resident Commissioner.

The White House will offer more details about the signing ceremony soon.
