Immigrant children seeking sanctuary face bleak future

On Friday, the Obama administration established a pilot program of attorneys and paralegals to deal with the spreading legal crisis in the immigration courts, in which teenagers, children and their family members now often attempt to represent themselves.

“How we treat those in need — particularly young people who must appear in immigration proceedings, many of whom are fleeing violence, persecution, abuse or trafficking — goes to the core of who we are as a nation,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in announcing the program.

‘Deaths every day’

With shelters overflowing, many of the young people are being housed at military bases, including one in San Antonio. And more than 100 Border Patrol agents have been shifted from other districts to South Texas, which has had an especially heavy surge of young immigrants, many traumatized by the ordeals they have faced along the way.
