Genetics, and the new American Meztizage

Here’s an interesting twist to the “Latino whiteness” debate. Science tell us that race is irrelevant.

Demography tells us that America is “browning,” but not in the strict Latino sense. America is browning because Americans are becoming less white (in numbers) and more of everything else – black, Asian, Latino …  But here’s the interesting thing: Latinos are leading the change.

Genetically, Latinos are the embodiment of the browning of America. We’re a blend of many peoples – indigenous, African, European, Asian … meztizo in a global sense of the word. What’s happening as races grow and blend in America is a continuation of what Latinos carry in their genes. According to 2010 Pew Research study, 15 percent of all marriages in the U.S. were by people who married outside their race. Among Latinos the rate is 26 percent.

Culturally, Chicanos could be seen as the leading edge of the new American meztizage. Chicanos have been blending American and Mexican cultures for centuries, to the extent that it has become neither one thing or the other, but a wonderful third.

We’re learning that racial divisions have been – and are becoming more – inaccurate; like drapes covering an open window.

So the browning of America is really a new American meztizage, and a UCSF/Stanford study- done to shed a light on medical treatment – confirms the idea.
