Politicians sling rhetoric, resources at migrant kids

*It’s increasingly difficult to find reports that have something new to say about the border immigrant children crisis. Most news reports re-purpose the same information for the sake of adding bulk to the latest politician soundbite, quote or tweet. This one, though, has a couple of different things to add: First, the policies that are being blamed for creating the conditions that led to the flood of immigrant children were passed by the GOP; they aren’t Obama’s policies, they’re Bush’s. And second, many of the children are coming to the U.S. because “they have some sort of direct relative they can connect to … ” VL

The deluge of unaccompanied Central American children crossing the border from Mexico reached a crisis point in early June.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency called in the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

On Friday, the politicians mobilized, disbursing resources and rhetoric.

Sen. John McCain, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and House Speaker John Boehner pointed fingers at President Barack Obama. But, in fact, the manner in which the federal agencies are handling the crisis was choreographed by a U.S. Supreme Court decision and two laws passed during the George W. Bush administration aimed at finding more-humanitarian ways to accommodate unaccompanied immigrant children.
