How You Can Help The Immigrant Children At The U.S. Border

*I’m glad the good folks at Our Tiempo did this. I too have become weary of the pointless politics and the ranting about the immigrant minors. This is a list of what you can do, aside from “likes,” retweets, shares and comments. VL

How can you help the immigrant children who are showing up in mass at the U.S. border? We did a quick google search and the majority of information out there was about the politics. Yes, we care about that part; but for those of us sitting around seeing the pictures of kids looking like refugees in a third world country, that just happens to be ours, the big question is- HOW CAN WE HELP?

Here are some charities and groups currently assisting in the effort to ease the boarder crisis. We encourage you to leave a comment if you know of additional groups.

SAVE THE CHILDREN

A well established international non-profit humanitarian aid organization. You can read more about their work in the recent LA Times articsave the childrenle and donate directly to their work HERE.

Save the Children is on the ground, working to address the immediate needs of children at the U.S. border. Increasing numbers of children, fleeing violence and insecurity in their Central American and Mexican communities, are in urgent need of protective and supportive adult care, medical and hygiene care, and nutritious meals. Save the Children is on the scene, providing child protection activities and programs, including Child Friendly Spaces to give these children access to structured play, emotional support, and supervision provided by caring adults.

Catholic CharitiesCATHOLIC CHARITIES

Much of the humanitarian work being done is supported by local Catholic and Protestant churches. If you are a member of a large denomination we encourage you to investigate what your church is doing. Chances are, there is a local congregation of your church in a boarder town right now offering some form of aid.

A great example is Catholic Charities in the Rio Grande Valley, who has been coordinating the local effort to create temporary shelters and distribute clothing and food donations. You can donate directly to Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley HERE.

Border angelsBORDER ANGELS

If you’re in California, Border Angels (based out of San Diego) is collecting donations of food, clothing, toys and other supplies for the thousands of immigrants expected to arrive in San Diego County over the next several weeks.

Contact them directly on their website and you can also link up directly with them on Facebook.

NLECNATIONAL LATINO EVANGELICAL COALITION

The National Latino Evangelical Coalition is providing direct aid via their REFUGIO program. Their work includes-

– Establish and provide temporary shelter group care for 25 to 100 unaccompanied children in a nurturing and caring environment.

– Provide transitional foster care homes for unaccompanied children under the age of 13, those that are siblings, and pregnant/parenting teens.

You can donate to the program directly HERE.

WE NEED YOUR HELP IN GROWING THIS LIST, SO PLEASE LEAVE A LINK AND COMMENT IF YOU KNOW OF OTHER REPUTABLE GROUPS PROVIDING DIRECT AID.
