Obama Taps Sarah Saldaña to Run ICE

*ICE has been without a Director for more than a year. Saldaña will be the first Latina to run that agency. The President’s approval among Latinos is dwindling, his record of deportations is a big part of that. Obama has signaled a big, bold move on the immigration front, soon. Given all that, it’s hard to not see this as political appeasement two months before the mid-term elections. VL

President Barack Obama has tapped a federal prosecutor in Texas to run the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which is at the center of a heated debate within the Obama administration over a surge of children crossing the border and broader questions about immigration policy.

Mr. Obama said he intends to nominate Sarah Saldaña, now the U.S. Attorney in the northern district of Texas, for the ICE job.

If confirmed, Ms. Saldaña would be the first Hispanic woman to run the immigration agency.
