How Latino Jews meld Hanukkah traditions in Los Angeles

Both of her parents were born in Catholic-dominated Mexico, but Jackie Ramirez doesn’t have a Christmas tree in her family’s West Los Angeles home.

While this time of year she does steam tamales (“of course”), Ramirez is focused on frying potato pancakes, or latkes, and performing ritual Hanukkah prayers with her toddler and fiancé.

She is one of thousands of Latino Jews in the Los Angeles area who, beginning tonight at sundown, will celebrate the eight-night festival of lights with a Latin twist. From mole potato pancakes to dreidel pinatas, Latino Jews meld traditions their families have accumulated over generations.
