Republicans might not be crazy to let the Telemundo debate go to Democrats

*Here’s another take on the effect of Telemundo not broadcasting the GOP presidential debate. Telemundo was cut-off from the debate when the RNC snubbed NBC after the CNBC debate. Borchers says that according to the primary calendar, Latinos will have little say in the GOP race until Super Tuesday, so it’s no loss to them to see Telemundo go to the Democrats. Politics is about numbers, no? VL

It was one thing for the Republican National Committee to suspend its debate partnership with NBC News and Telemundo, as it did last week in protest of “bad faith” debate moderation by CNBC in Boulder. The move arguably makes GOP presidential candidates look like a principled, take-no-guff bunch from that damned media. (Shakes fist at sky.)

It’s another thing for Telemundo (part of the NBCUniversal family of networks) to flip the debate, scheduled for Feb. 26, into a Democratic forum instead. A decision isn’t final — or at least not public — but the risk for Republicans is appearing adversarial and unwelcoming to Hispanic voters, a growing share of the electorate that conservatives insist they want to win over, even as Democrats seek to position themselves as the exact opposite.

Republicans would be crazy to let this happen, right? Well, yes and no.
