Raucous and outspoken, René Pérez Joglar, aka Residente, and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez, aka Visitante, of the Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 are known for their brash lyrics, resonant rhythms, and candid social commentary.
For those unfamiliar with the group and their politics, it’s tempting to write Calle 13 off as just another reggaeton band. But after taking a thoughtful listen to some of Residente’s cleverly written lines and deciphering the diverse influences found in their music, it becomes clear that they’re on an entirely different level than other groups in the genre.
